A magnificently crafted 19th century Swiss Black Forest carving, all from a single piece of wood, this is a smoker's chest or cabinet. Hinged just below the eagle, it opens to expose a compartment for tobacco (or candies, whatever), and in front there is an opening for matches and also for spent matches or ashes. The eagle, wings unfurled is fishing the bear climbing to the eagle's perch. Nearly 12" tall, a large oval-ish base, sturdy and thrilling. Very good to excellent condition for age and type, Large and impressive, the bear is spectacular, a fine anatomical study. I have marked the flaws with 'x'. You will note (primarily from top view) that there has been an old repaired break to each wing. Still, it's rather surprising that the wings were reattached and remain. I can see a glue line which one might wish to do a little work upon in order to make it disappear from view. We left it so you could see the flaw, though. Rare theme, bears and eagles are fabulously sought after.
