I'™ll be brief in describing each one, but they'™ve come to us out of Paris and from the estate of a noted (and titled) collector who chose to remain anonymous. Wish we could disclose. This one is a great one for the smaller cheroot cigars popular in their time, and is a fine leather slip case, baffled to hold about 3-4 cigars (see final image to show with cigars). The leather is a fine quality and remains supple. It is beautifully gold-embossed and the inset is an embroidered cross stitch panel of linen needlework canvas, a bouquet of flowers. Suitable for a lady’s spectacles or a gentleman's cigars.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVery good to excellent for age and type. We purchased this with a claim that it was by or associated with Faberge in some way but I've not been able to, so far. The silversmith marks appear to be for Theodor Nugren from the workshop of Pavel Ovchinnikov (c.1830–88), St. Petersburg, Russia, 1899–1908. When it comes to jewelers of the Russian Imperial court, the first name to be mentioned is of course Faberge, which produced gem-encrusted Easter eggs, cigarette cases made of precious metals, and other objects as presents for the royal family and aristocracy. However, there were many other official court jewelers whose skills were equally exquisite. One of those was that of Pavel Ovchinnikov.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePavel Ovchinnikov was appointed official purveyor to the future Tsar Alexander III (1865), King Victor Emmanuel II of Italy (1873), Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolaevich (1878) and King Christian IX of Denmark (1888). He was awarded the Légion d’honneur (1867) and the Order of the Iron Crown (1873). His firm was a trendsetter on the Russian pre-revolution jewelry market. He revived and developed the art of producing enamels. Thin layers of enamel over filigree were applied to the company's dinnerware and icon rizas: the ornament would be created with the use of a silver thread, and the spaces between the individual threads would be filled with enamel of different colors. This was even more complex than the \"stained-glass\" enamel technique pioneered by Ovchinnikov. Without any solid base, this enamel looked like a glass painting in a Gothic cathedral if held up to light. The company also used the ancient niello technique to create engravings of the Kremlin and Moscow cathedrals. One of the firm's most prominent works was a luxurious icon screen, made of silver and gold, for the Kremlin's Dormition Cathedral. Ovchinnikov was one of the first entrepreneurs of the 19th century to realize the importance of artistic education, and he founded a school for talented young people to study goldsmithery for five or six years.   The combination of the zolotnik and city marks together in the oblong oval marking, as seen on this piece, was used between 1882-1899. The \"84\" tells us that the piece is in at least .875 silver (87.5% pure silver so just under the .925 standard for \"sterling\" silver). The hammer \u0026amp; sickle mark to the right of that is for the city of St. Petersburg. Larger than the average snuff box, smaller than the average cigar case, this one is missing the original ribbons on the inside that would have held the cigarettes or cheroots in each side but that's easily fixed if you so wish. A lovely piece, an exquisite stocking stuffer :).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVery good condition. There is a dark spot visible on the lid, I'm sure it would polish out but we somehow missed doing so before photographing. As mentioned the inner ribbons or elastic on each side of the interior is missing. No dents that I can see and the clasp works just fine. The painting on top is Marie-Antoinette and her children, the bottom is one of the garden pavillions on the grounds at Versailles, and other images shown are also on the grounds of or are in fact, the Palace of Versailles. The contemporary nature of this important piece makes it a very special acquisition for any collector of this fascinating era of French history, as well as of fine art and miniatures. Astounding piece! I am captivated by it and will surely regret forever if you buy it away from me. But here it is - as you like it: the uncommon treasure! Offering here a spectacular and early snuff box, a pocket snuff, 2.75\" in diameter, still in the protective presentation and travel etui. I have been told, and it does seem very likely that the portrait is a \"sitting\" miniature (one of a kind) of French King Louis XV in his later years. It's likely, as a nose will thicken and the mouth certainly looks right, eyes in age. Louis XV, known as Louis the Beloved, was a monarch of the House of Bourbon who ruled as King of France from 1 September 1715 until his death in 1774. He was 64 at the time of his death, so for his time quite an old gentleman who would show some aging as we see here in this personal item he's had done as a personal gift, perhaps to his mistress, Madame De Pompadour. We can't know the exact history of this box, however. He succeeded his great-grandfather Louis XIV at the age of five. He is the father of ill-fated King Louis XVI, husband of French Queen Marie-Antoinette. The small box is mounted in 14k gold pique and frame, (acid tested), which surprised me since I would have expected the standard 18k for a French case. An exceptional piece, nonetheless, and important! I've had access to the disbursal of a very important collection of antique snuff boxes out of Paris, and this is one from that exquisite collection. While it must remain anonymous, the history is as charming as is the box.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe snuff box is in very good to excellent condition for age and type. The painting is perfectly preserved beneath the slightly convex and highly polished original cover glass. It appears the gold frame has been removed and re-inserted to the box top, leaving it slightly raised from a flush fit. The box has 2 tiny rim nips, I've marked with \"x\" on a photo to allow you ease in finding them. They're tiny. The outer etui, very unusual to find a snuff box still in one of these, by the way, is in remarkably good form also. The case is leather and has a shrinkage crack in the bottom that is not much of a flaw for a case of this age. The leather is quite solid, stiff, has held up very well. I'm unsure what type of leather it is. It has a look of shagreen, but I don't think it is. Hinge and clasps all intact. It's been a museum-quality private collection treasure! But what we do have here is a kiln-fired enamel plaque, beautifully done in 'grisaille' or monocromatic shades of gray, and then with an applied accented background of deep pink to reddish color enamel in the recesses, as visible. The work is beautifully done. The gold is all present but a small strip of it on the very bottom, underside of the snuff box, as shown. As a display item in your collection or vitrine, that little flaw will never show. An amazing piece, sure to thrill you.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat interior is without damage, not a single nip or chip or bite along the rim or exterior - quite rare in this material and age. We'd place it mid-1800s owing to the 15k gold and the form and style, yet it could be earlier. Each band of gold has hallmark punchmarks, and we've detailed them for your own research. A gorgeous depiction in enamel of classical figures, here it's Cupid and perhaps Psyche but in a mourning type setting, so perhaps only Cupid as love representation for the beloved or mourned. There is evidence there on the lid of a gold trim gone missing, (note the pins there), but the aesthetic of the snuff box is little altered by its lack, as you can see - it's superb as it stands. Precious heirloom, it's been treated with utmost care all this time, based on the fine condition it survives in. Museum piece, museum quality! Though perhaps you'll find it perfect to display your several old tortie cigar cases, instead, there in the front, and perhaps a coin purse or 2 or 3 in that little canoe-like pouch. This one dates to the Napoleon III era, we are quite sure, c.1850-70, if not earlier. The wheel turns. It's perfect as accoutrement for a doll collector, sized as it is. Heavy old door bronze, this is not just pressed brass ormolu. Full measurements are noted in the photos.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVery good to excellent condition throughout. I can't find a single flaw to note. The fabric silk lining of the canoe-shaped pouch you see there is old but not tattered much at all. No breaks, no weakened joints, and the wheel turns smoothly. This is an 1870s snuff box, done in the then brand new invention of Cellulose nitrate, a highly acclaimed and utilized mimic for tortoise shell and ivory and mother of pearl as they became difficult to supply in later 1800s. This one mimics blond tortoiseshell, to a greater or lesser effective result, arguably. The cover glass has perfectly protected the portrait miniature (on card) that is housed within. This type of portrait miniature would have been done as a Grand Tour tourist trade souvenir, and the subject shown here is a stylized image after a portrait of Marie-Antoinette by artist, Vigee LeBrun.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVery nice condition on the hand painted portrait. It is a fine leather case, hinged to open and to hold about six 5\" cigars (see image to show with cigars). The leather is a fine quality and remains supple. It is beautifully hand worked beadwork inset surrounded by a gold-embossed frame line. The interior is leather and in very nice condition for age. The more solid nature of the case owes to it being metal under the leather and beadwork. It is silver in color, but is not sterling silver. Likely silver plate. Suitable for a lady's spectacles and evening needs if you wish to use as a little evening purse (I used to use these in that way, mostly the ones in tortoise shell with pique work - stunning old things), or also perfect for a gentleman's cigars.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVery good to excellent for age and type. Interior lid also veneered in shell, so it's as pretty displayed open as closed. Larger than a pocket snuff, it's definitely one meant for the desk or table of some important lady or gentleman in, I would say, the late 1700s to earliest 1800s. We love finding these in their original fitted presentation case, to show how the pair of matching items, 'necessaire' or 'aide d'memoire' and the coin purse, would have been given in origin. That said, this pair is just stunning! More highly polished to higher sheen than most, they have also been better cared for than most and survive in very good condition apart from having been lunch to some bug over time in one spot (darn bug!). I love the arching top. The thrill of cognac or blond shell interspersed by chocolate on this one is just to die for, isn't it. A couple of imperfections left as they were, and nothing missing otherwise. Raised on the original steel feet and with a monogrammed cartouche down front below the lock. I do not have the original key. We might be able to locate a key that will work the lock, but I've just never bothered. It's been my display collection item for about 30 years. The stringing up top is likely lead. The interior is a bit of a mess, as you can see. One could certainly line it in oil-marbled paper and use it again for tea. There are some notations of prior ownership noted at some point in time on the inner lid's paper. Her portrait is protected by the original convex cover glass, and I must apologize for the dust my lights and digital camera caught. They show as tiny white dots, but in fact the glass is clear, very fine. The snuff box is in very nice condition, a couple of small bug bites on the outer rim, but displays beautifully. Shell liner\/body, all intact, with one roughness on a spot of inner rim, lid (shown in detail along with bug bite in our images). The box is 3 3\/8\" in diameter. This cigar case, in superb c.1850-60s tortoise shell, has a generously sized eglomise (back-painted glass) view and it is just exceptionally fine. Some use these old cases, as I have, as an evening or after-hours 'purse'. Tuck in your credit card, some business cards, your car fob, and palm carry this incredibly interesting conversation starter - just for fun. Some use these for spectacles cases. The leather baffled sides allow the case to expand to hold cigars on each side, of course, as it was originally a cigar case. Nearly 6\" long, full measurements noted on the photos.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVery good to excellent condition for age and type. One of the finest in my collection, and quite rare to have Venice scene (usually these are Paris views). The mounted cartouche of back-painted glass is backed by foil or mother or pearl and shimmers in light in the windows, doorway of the old San Marco. No missing paint, no chips nor cracks in the cover glass. The old original silk interior is remarkably unscathed by time (one small area stain). The outer panels of tortoise shell are beautifully mottled in chocolate to cognac coloration and are without warping or malformation, no chips, no cracks or breaks, but there are several very small bug bites on the back panel, showing as light recesses mostly below the double oval cartouche which is not yet monogrammed. Look there to evaluate. The front facing panel with San Marcos is pristine, not even a lift to the ornamental inlay of brass around perimeter. The flaw notable would be the thin inner lip of the box, lined in natural shell, which has chipped quite a bit - see images. I have not tested the pique inlays, but typically it is karat gold and sterling silver in these. Beautifully crafted, the dots and elegantly worked 2-band edging are fully intact, and the entire cartouche bouquet is complete without any lifts or losses. The bottom half, however, has rim chips and the round bottom has been dislodged at some point and re-set, slightly off kilter, as you can see from our photos. Closed and in display, however, it is lovely. No loss to pique work, which shows typical c.1750s artistry.
