A nice large table snuff box in wonderful condition, and not only with a superb Hand painted portrait miniature up top, but also with the note explaining who she is. Someone's grandmother, a name given. Certainly one could find her with enough search time. What we know is her fashion and the overall presentation puts here in c.1770-80s, and she's lovely! The fun of a tiara of flowers is so young and sweet and innocent, (and the pearls SO large!), you know there's more story than we have. Box is 3 5/8", superb lathe-turned burled wood and the old shell lining is excellent, not a nip nor chip at all.
Very good to excellent throughout. No damage to the painting, though I did not take her out of her mount to see if we have an artist's signature at rim, which is sometimes the case. The brass mat doesn't want to come loose with ease, and I'm not one to pry. All photos of her are taken through the convex cover glass, so glares are visible, but no loss nor damage at all. Box is without warp, no damage, fits smoothly and displays beautifully. It is about 1.25" tallest, closed.
