I do not know much about these, really, other than they work up into insets for the most opulent throw pillows ever, and this one is perfect for that use. It is a 19th century hand made and hand embroidered liturgical stole, a vestment worn for formal service, mass. It is elaborate as can be, and very heavy, actually. That owing to the golden metal threads all of that passementerie; the lush fringe and pair of tassels on cording. All in that heavy metal thread. As is the embroidery, too. Seems even the woven fabric has some of it, and that's partly why the weight is substantial.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. A few lengths missing on that one side, the fringe on bottom. The tassels are superb, as is the cord. There are no holes nor tears or deteriorations to that gold fabric, and only some fading to the purple silk velvet that lines it. Still quite lush. No odors, little if any surface dust. It's wonderful compared to most of this type of work. Perfect to make up on another lush velvet, perhaps, in center front of a pair os stunning throw or sofa pillows. You know the look. The panels are 9.5" widest, and the full length of the stole is 40". Made as it is, you could use some or all of that narrow collar piece - what about a longish bolster pillow - wouldn't that be fabulous on your bed!
