A garnet necklace with clasp showing in front, and a gown of red, this woman with the pale blue eyes sat for her portrait some 210 years ago, give or take a few. Like with so many of these beautiful old paintings, the artist has not signed it and the identity of the young woman is not noted. There was once a backing, which one can only now see traces of on frame's back. Perhaps that would have had a little more information, but all we have is her image. Unique round frame from this era, when most were oval or square. Very nicely preserved, the old original slightly convex cover glass is undamaged, and frame and painting are near-pristine. Very good to excellent condition throughout, no damage to report. Painting is done in gouache or watercolor on thin wafer, typical of the genre. Photography was a long-distant future invention, and small works of art like this one were the only way to capture ones likeness - perhaps for a lover; a betrothed, or for parents to keep when she married and moved away. Measurements are noted on the photos.
