With roots to Northern European 1500-1600s paintings representing the makings of a feast or a simple dinner, these later French paintings are not celebrations of the kill, but are prayers, almost, of thanksgiving for the makings of the day's meal. Here, you see that played out with the 3 snipes ( I think they are something like a snipe - the long pointed beaks), and a cooking pot, a decorated clay pitcher and a glass wine goblet rounding out the items on the tabletop. But the painting is a beautiful rendition of a popular 19th century theme known as \"nature morte\", a still life which usually had birds, animals, sea creatures or fish and sometimes kitchen tools. The genre has more to do with a sort of prayer for the bounty of a meal to be prepared than it does to do with dead things. Normally it's that which will be prepped for the evening meal, and often a pan and some vegetables complete the scene. Seems a little odd, perhaps, but they were almost always hung by strings, almost a Trompe l'oeil type of still life set up. Elegant kitchen painting, really - early 19th century oil painting, a sporting scene with the hunt theme typically referred to as \"nature morte\", a still life with dead game, fowl, the day's dinner. These type of paintings are like little prayers of thanks for the plentiful bounty of the hunt, and yet often show just a couple of small dead birds, humble and yet still a prayer of thanks. I've got a few now that I'm going to use. My plan is to build them into cabinetry renovation in kitchen, and also to have a 4\" depth box frame backing made for one that can be wall-mounted as a cabinet in bathroom, mirror back and lined with glass shelves, to use as as upscale medicine cabinet. Might recess the cabinet part into the wall instead. You'll surely come up with great decorator ideas of your own. Heavy old forest growth wood, 25.5\" x 25\" x 1,75\" and a carving depth of about 2.5\" in deep bas relief: a figural carved face surrounded in an elaborate neo-renaissance setting. This one is a stunning old 19th century French carved neo-Classical or Renaissance revival plaque in ready-to-hang or you might want to build into your cabinetry; use as a door for a wall cabinet for medicine chest use in a bathroom; or put in a frame to display as the work of art it truly is. It was once a door to a large cabinet or bar, and does have the lock hardware but balanced by its repeat on the other side, so looks like trim, really. Fruit bowls, acanthus, shells and pillar motif surround the figure, just like the grotesques in the finest Renaissance Palaces of Florence, Italy. Photos tell all. The rather rare large carved fox has glass eyes, wonderful anatomical detail but for his snout, which has been lost and remade as a reconstruction at some point in history. It's not that difficult to either carve a replacement or mold one from wood filler, mount it over a screw you've driven into his head with screw head acting as a support and anchor for the newly molded snout. This is, from the look of it, what someone has already done, but they were not very adept in their sculpting. A little long and pointy and lacks definition. Had I time for it, I'd love to restore him a little better. But, alas, I'm trying hard to work through crates and crates of unlisted antiques and that's where my time is allotted. So, you get him at a fraction of his true worth. Very good condition for age and type. As noted above. Normally a largish carved fox figure like this would be about double our price. Sure, he's cute as can be just as he is, too, but his body is nicer than his snout restoration.
