Superb 19th century carver's sculpture, an Animalier work of art, large eagle attacking a chamois goat and her kid who huddles under her belly. Such fine detail, elegant slender unfurled wings, each feather lifelike and beautiful. Sculptures like this one beg to be lighted in display. I've used several as the focus on a specially made lamp with plinth base, bathing light on the carved figures. Whomever was this carver had an exceptional grasp of anatomical detail, and the piece is entirely carved from a single block of wood. Full measurements noted on the photos.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type, not quite flawless, but close. These stunning old creations almost never survive this long without a little loss, and this one has a few small chips at ends of the slender delicately carved wing feathers. I can see a little bit of the eagle's tail to the left as you look at the photo taken from backside, also chipped. Amazingly, chamois goat's ears and horns and legs are all fine, as is that hooked beak and the talons attacking her. Her baby huddles for protection beneath her and the baby is missing tiny ears. Still, not much for this type of carved sculpture, and it displays beautifully. I see it in Aspen, Adirondacks or a ranch or cabin decor, ski lodge, gentleman's office or den. Fine nature study.
