Found in France, the top inset has a bit of a Black Forest feet to the carved flower plaque as focal point of the top. A large and heavy workbox or jewelry chest, it opens to reveal covered compartments and a hinged mirror that tucks into the inner lid. Perhaps a vanity or makeup box, but more likely than not, a work box. Women's sewing boxes were often compartmented and often had a mirror in the inner lid. Presents with dramatic beauty, very well made, it rises on cast bronze or bronzed metal paw feet. Full measurements noted on the photos.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, with a nod to the lock, which is missing the pin and the key. Each of the 7 compartment lids has the original bone knob, no splits of breaks. Photos show it from all sides, showing the beautiful contrasted wood parquet and stringing all around, not a bit of it missing. There is a compartment behind the hinged mirror. The mirror swings forward as shown in our images, seems as if it might have once had or needs a stay to keep it in place when set into the lid. A beautifully carved floral plaque mounted in top has no chips at all. Slightly shiny in photos after a clean and light wax, will soften to the satin-finish wood finish.
