A stunning example of Swiss Black Forest craftsmanship from the Victorian to early Edwardian era. This hand-carved wooden casket measures 11¼ inches and showcases the period's signature artistry with intricate foliate detailing throughout. The showstopping feature is its sculptural top—a remarkable composition of two birds nestled among foliage, rendered with exceptional detail and naturalistic charm. Perfect for storing jewelry, desk treasures, or displaying as a decorative accent piece. The quality of the carving and the whimsical subject matter exemplify the skilled woodworking that made Black Forest pieces highly sought after during this golden age of decorative arts. A true collector's treasure with authentic character and timeless appeal.
Very good condition. We're not sure if the figural bird top carving is original, it seems to have a slightly different sheen though the color of wood finish matches so, who knows. Possibly a small nip or two but, as you can see, it's in great shape given its 100 or so years. The teal silk or satin tufted interior is fully intact and in near pristine condition. All hardware is original and it has a working lock with old steel skeleton key. See images for all measurements.
