Spectacular antique Victorian era papier macho 12" x 9" writer's folio or blotter cover with ornate decoration including mother of pearl inlays & eglomise or reverse painted glass Grand Tour souvenir scene of Newstead Abbey!  This is the binder or folio for a Victorian desktop 'blotter'. The blotter was a requisite tool when quill pens were used. A penned letter or document was pressed between sheets of blotter paper within, which absorbed any extra ink and would keep the document from smearing. The old papier mache covers for those blotter sheets of paper make lovely stationery folders or covers now and are a fine accent for your desktop or for a guest room if you tuck in some nice stationery for your guests' use. The inlays of mother of pearl are all intact on this one, which is rather rare, and it has that fantastic "eglomise" or reverse painted glass Grand Tour style souvenir scene entitled "Newstead" for Newstead Abbey.  Truly remarkable in every respect and a magnificent desk or writing table top decorative accent!

Very good to excellent condition, age & materials considered.  There is a bit of cracking visible in the painting.  Some crazing to the papier macho but hardly a sign of loss to the pearl inlays and painted decorations.  Original printed paper interior but no contents.  See pictures for all measurements.
