The furniture makers of France also created a host of the most beautiful boxes for all uses, perhaps reaching an apex during the Napoleon III era, c.1850-70s. They're made with precision and all the elegance that also went into finest French furniture. This one is beautifully crafted and very nicely preserved. Brass stringing and cartouche with boulle accents in blue and white, red, contrasted with the natural woodgrain and stain, it is as beautiful open as closed. I've used it in my other home to hold a beautiful set of French Sterling silver and 18k gold vermeil spoons, though it's not fitted out specifically for that use. It is the right size typically used for that purpose but wonderful asa a jewelry box. It's an open roomy interior and would be handsome as a gentleman's jewelry or desktop box, or even as a storage caddy for wrapped cigars. It is not a humidor. Full measurements noted on the photos.
Very good to excellent condition throughout, age and type considered. All inlays are firmly in place and the old original working key remains. Note the higher end hardware that holds the box open nicely for display. No warp, nicely hinged, it is a dramatic beauty you'll love as I have.
