A 19th century hand painted snuff box portrait miniature or miniature painting set in top. The box is wood, a slight contrasting wood forming a rim on both top and bottom halves. Interior has shell lining, typical of the old snuff boxes. This one would seem 18th century based on the figures, which could be interpreted as maidens pleading with Cupid, a Neoclassical theme often done in 18th century, but I think it's last half of 19th century and created during the revival of all things Louis XVI. Full measurements are noted on the photos, but those faces are an impossible 1/8" from chin to hairline - quite exceptional little painting.
Very good condition, with it being a cover glass shy of excellent. No damage to the little painting, but it should have a cover glass cut for it and it remains a bit 'fragile' without - fine for display, but ought to have protection. The wood is beautiful and without damage, as is the shell liner. Not even a chip on that thin liner's lip which rises and forms the closure over which the top half slides - smoothly and evenly without any warp. A gorgeous old on - just needs a thin glass cut.
