A very interesting large c.1793 portrait of Just Evrard, 41 years old when it was painted. He has a powdered wig, and a delightfully interesting history from the translation of the writing on the old paper backing of the framed portrait. Active in the Revolution and later struggle for the leadership of France, he was titled, son of a Lord, and himself a "Squire Lord of Helloy", and he fought for the Royals. He was arrested for his involvement with the "Black Beasts", a subversive group of India Indians. Fortunate not to have met the guillotine, he lived out his long life to age 94.  You can look up his genealogy. The map in our photos show the area of France in which he lived out his life. A fine portrait without artist's signature, he shows himself a man of dignity. Full measurements and translation of the old French writing are found in our photos.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type, the frame has been very well preserved and while someone has taken the full papered backing off at some point, likely to gain access to clean the original cover glass of dust, they have preserved the important written history of M. Evrard. The only flaw is a little at the right edge of the wafer, much of which is hidden by frame when it's in place, but must be noted. Amazing 18th century man and story, both.
