A magnificent 19th century Napoleon III (c.1850-70) large gaming chest which has had the interior fittings and gaming chips removed and is now a superb documents or table or desk box. Letters, photos, your own special objects, or put it back to use with your chips and poker cards, bridge cards. A very beautiful one, we'd expect to see an engraved maker's signature on that lock plate, like TAHAN or P. Sormani, or A. Giroux. But we have no signature. Just a splendid look. Maybe your cigars?
Very good condition for age and type. You can see it's stunning from exterior view with the rounded corners and a fine pencil edging of heavy brass. Accented by contrasting hardwood and brass stringing, and that elaborate bouquet of mother of pearl flowers and brass stems hasn't a bit of lift anywhere. There is a fine inlaid cartouche, as well, that is awaiting your monogram. Working lock, original key. The hardware is the finest quality, holds the box open at 95 degree angle (corner brace), though one side misses its arched metal. Works perfectly as it is. Very large as these boxes go. About 3" tall, closed and it is 12" x 9+" rectangle. Gorgeous wood, original satin finish.
