Dating c.1800-1820s, the painting of these 2 children holding their bouquets of pro-Royals/Nobility flowers (carnations, etc) tells us a story. They might have been in exile throughout the French Empire years, as Napoleon's Empire played out. Portraits done holding certain flowers became political statements, depending upon the flowers depicted. Another charming aspect of the painting is that the girl wears a necklace of red coral, which in that time was thought to be a protective talisman and particularly in regards to young girls. A fabulous painting! There is no ID, no artist's signature, well framed and all original. Slightly convex cover glass is original.
Very good to excellent condition throughout, a cleaned cover glass and no cracks or breaks in painting, glass or frame. Slight tarnish on the cover's aperture mount. Full measurements noted on the photos. Gouache on thin wafer, typical of the era and genre.
