Pretty as can be, and very well preserved for age and type, this would be a late 1800s to perhaps as late as 1915 hand carved jewelry box. The oval shape is always popular, harder to find. The carving is beautifully done on this one, and a "52" carver's mark is embossed onto the bottom. I'm told carvers used an identifying number and the shops representing them then knew who to pay once Grand Tour souvenir seekers bought their goods. The cabriole legs always add aesthetically, in my view, and any everlasting bouquet of full-relief carved flowers crown it well. Measurement is 7 3/4" x 5 1/8" oval, 4" tall rising to 5 1/8" top of flowers.
Very good to excellent for age and type. Superb artisan's work, and precision on the repeat patterning. Florals up top have one flower petal showing a chip. There is also one lower lobe of one Cabriole leg which shows a tight hairline where it has been nicely repaired after a break. It is solid and firm, nicely done. I've marked it with an "x". The original moire silk lining is in quite remarkably good condition, too.
