Elaborately composed garden prep still life with wine, the preparations of the evening's meal. A soup or stew, not much protein in view as is sometimes the case in these, but it has that same "prayer of thanksgiving" to it that the old still life truly is. A popular theme since the 1500s northern Europeans did these, one truly must have one in kitchen or dining room, right? The size of this one is impressive. I purchased it in France, of course. I love the painting. The old frame shows its age here and there. And somehow perfectly houses this particular painting. There is only a combined initial signature, and the date 1899 written bottom right corner. You can see it enlarged in our photos.
Very good to excellent for age and type, the frame is original and has some knocks as you can see, to the old appliqués gesso. Wood frame, showing you its age from backside, where you see it is heavy old hardwood, the stretched canvas still nicely housed. Ready to hang, though if you don't want it to lean forward from top, you'll want to re-set that hanging apparatus. I like a more flush hang, so would raise it higher up on the frame. We'll leave it as it came to us from France, however. Old linen canvas has no visible restorations, is still nicely stretched. A gold filet adds to the appeal of the frame's choice, doesn't it.
