Just a charming little work of art, signed by the artist (lower left) and dated 44, meaning either 1844 or likelier 1944. It is a charming composition of an apartment interior, chair facing the window and bright spring flowers in a simple jar on the desktop. A side table with a pot on it. Inviting! No French apartment is without art. Even the simplest. Art IS French language, isn't it. This simple little painting in oil is unframed, painted in the Impressionist manner on a homemade canvas comprised of linen fabric glued to the back of an old cardboard calendar. Part of the charm is the simplicity. Unframed, some loss to corners. I'm sure it was hung or rested on a mantel or shelf in display without. Both palette and composition are superb!
Very good to excellent considering the age and materials. You can see that corners are foxed or blunted over the century, and it's never been in a frame, no disruption at all to the painting, itself. A quick impressionist sketch of a momentary pleasure. The artist has signed it lower left (see images for enlargement) It is 13" x 9 1/2", has a very very slight warp (I'm pressing it under heavy books so it will likely be completely flat for our buyer). Charming!
