Really, one of the finest in overall condition, this mid-1800s kiln-fired enamel on serpentine and domed copper plaques is exceptional in size and in enamel condition. It's definitely been well-cared for. Usually we find hairline cracks or chips or worse because the porcelain powders applied to copper forms, then melted to a glassine finish in kiln. Layers, applied jewel dots, and hand painted gold enamel accents all are gorgeous on this one. I know there was a professional restoration along the line of one corner (marked with X on photos for your review) which is only noticeable as slightly less high shine and only if you know exactly where to look. Interior original silk lining is fully intact in bottom half, but I'm sure a padded inset for lid is missing. Interior of lid is also covered in kiln-fired enamel - lovely as it is, or you can certainly cover a cardboard cut to size and replace the lid lining. This is how it came to us. Full measurements noted on photos, but this is a large one, body of which is 6 1/2" long, 4 3/8" wide, plus the cabriole legs. As it stands, it is 4" tall.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type. As noted above, one of the finest ones we've found. One mention, it is oddly asymmetrical. Look at it from the 'above' photos to see what I mean. Stands solidly on 4 cast cabriole legs, each of which is firmly attached. There is no key at listing time, though it does have a lock and appears it would work if we can match a key to it from among our spares. The lid does close smoothly and fully, and hinge is excellent, too. No damage to framework. I've written about the enamel above.
