Such a fabulous portrait! In this era, small children's dress was much alike, boys in same gowns until around 4-5, and with long hair. The traditional hair part is what tells us this child is a girl (center part) rather than a boy (side part). The painting might well be late 1700s, as it was presented to me, when it was fashionable to do portrait miniatures in an outdoor setting. The rows of evergreens draw the eye to her eyes, which are large and expressive. One of my favorites from my own collections. Full measurements noted on the photos.
Very good to excellent condition, age and type considered. Well cared for and treasured for centuries, there are no flaws to note on the gouache painting on thin surface panel, no warp or cracks or chips. The frame and cover glass are original and each in fine condition for age, as well. Beautiful painting but I do not see a signature and we do not have ID.
