Someone's aging mother or perhaps grandmother, painting in oil on stretched canvas, she is a no-nonsense subject, seemingly lacking enthusiasm for her portrait to be done. She is proper in her matronly attire and yet does not forego the gold earrings and necklace chains, perhaps from her youth. I've kept this painting since bringing it from France more than a decade ago. She's practically family. The artist has not given us much to interpret, just "de T. 1886", as simple and straightforward as his or her subject. Those features very likely composed themselves in a playful and inviting youth, clergies blue eyes, a fine nose of nobility and lovely cheekbones. One wonders - in her time, what story played out for her. And is she more than about 40? Probably not.
Very good to excellent condition as you can see, still nicely stretched on the stretcher and on original canvas. One can see from the backside, a single small patch (white) of canvas which indicates there was a small hole or imperfection which has been professionally restored. On the corresponding spot on the painting's surface, I can see where it's been done, but it's not a distraction. No restorations to her face or body. The painting is large, 28 3/4" x 23 1/2" and in frame, 32" x 27" x 1 1/4". Ready to hang.
