A spectacular and early snuff or perhaps patch box, dainty at 2.5" in diameter, made of sterling silver that has an 18k gold lining (vermeil), and whose exterior is entirely hand decorated in the manner of the Vernis Martin, (varnish layering with paint) which was the favorite of French Queen Marie-Antoinette. The small box is painted in scenes from the time of Louis XV, and could certainly be that old, as well. There are very tiny punch marks we can't decipher and which our photographer missed capturing. They are found on the rim and show when the box is closed as well. I'll try to get photos of the mark and add. But for expedience, I want to get this one up and on sale. I've had access to the disbursal of a very important collection of antique snuff boxes out of Paris, and this is one from that exquisite collection. While it must remain anonymous, the history is as charming as is the box.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. There is a single ding chip through the layered pain and varnish and you can see it in the region above figures, almost seeming like they're looking at it or pointing at it. Tiny, not a distraction in person, but you know we've greatly enlarged this snuff box for your review. Entirely hand painted and in remarkably fine condition for something of its age and hand made composition. A little work of art!
