In the fashion and hair and profile typical of those done near the time of the French Revolution, you see the powdered hair or wig with the long ponytail back tied in black ribbon, a high collar and wide lapel - lace cravat, all c.1770s to 1780s. Sadly, there is no identifying information and no artist signature to help with research, so he remains lost to his era and the turmoil then in France. I love this painting! It is a watercolor on what would appear to be paper or vellum, from the way the paint looks on surface. The slight imperfections are those of an artist, perhaps rushed a bit by the pressures of upcoming battles and intrigues. A rather resolute younger man, likely his only image.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type, 250 years old now. The burled wood snuff box onto which he's mounted has been treasured well through time, and shows very nicely. Photos from all angles for your inspection. Cover glass is in place. Full measurements noted: 3.5" in diameter box, 1 2/8" tall when closed. A 2 1/4" diameter mounted painting, his face is just 3/4" from chin to hairline.
