Elegant antique American Sheraton style 9 3/4" wide double inkwell or ink stand, a marquetry style inlaid rosewood base with two sterling silver & cut glass inkwells, sterling silver pen holders and ball feet! For the Sheraton enthusiasts for sure, what a lovely accent if you happen to be fortunate enough to have a Sheraton desk or writing table.
Sheraton is a late 18th-century neoclassical English furniture style, in vogue ca 1785 - 1820, that was coined by 19th century collectors and dealers to credit furniture designer Thomas Sheraton, born in Stockton-on-Tees, England in 1751 and whose books, "The Cabinet Dictionary" (1803) of engraved designs and the "Cabinet Maker's & Upholsterer's Drawing Book" (1791) of furniture patterns exemplify this style.
The Sheraton style was inspired by the Louis XVI style and features round tapered legs, fluting and most notably contrasting veneer inlays. Sheraton style furniture takes lightweight rectilinear forms, using satinwood, mahogany and tulipwood, sycamore and rosewood for inlaid decorations, though painted finishes and brass fittings are also to be found. Swags, husks, flutings, festoons, and rams' heads are amongst the common motifs applied to pieces of this style.
The wooden base is 9.75" wide and has a total depth, including the silver pen holder hooks, of just under 5". Original to the stand, the two inkwells are lovely all by themselves. Thick wheel cut glass with tapered bottoms that fit into the base holes. The tops in marked sterling silver with interlaced monograms on top and also along the front curves. No silversmith marks that I can see but surely of American origins.
Very good to excellent condition. No dents or damage to the silver tops & collars, no chips or cracks to the cut glass inkwell bodies. Also, no damage to the wooden stand. See pictures for all measurements. Return Policy:We always honor a 3-day return on our items, and guarantee them to be as described. We most often use USPS for our shipping needs but will be happy to ship by another carrier if you prefer. We charge only actual postage & insurance, never a handling fee and never for packaging materials. Ebay is now requiring that our clients rank us on "shipping". The shipping price, speed and handling are actually under the sole control of the delivering postal agency, not Antiques & Uncommon Treasure so please remember that and leave us high DSR rankings. As always, please also feel free to contact us if you have any problems or concerns, we'll do what we can to ensure a happy and mutually enjoyable transaction.Insurance has been eliminated as an option by ebay, forcing us sellers to either ship your items without insurance or assume that expense also. We always insure our items BUT, more importantly, pack them extremely well knowing that most are not replaceable. Again, damage in transit, while rare in our experience, is due to the postal agency handling and not caused by Antiques & Uncommon Treasure. Please remember that when leaving DSR ratings. Thanks! Our shipping days are Tuesday and Friday, paid items will be shipped on the first shipping day after payment is received (except when special circumstances exist). We prefer to use USPS whenever possible, and require all packages to be insured. If you prefer another method of shipment, please mention it.
