Oil painting portrait on copper plaque, framed in wood frame with gilded gesso ornamentation, this is a likely Prussian or Northern European artist's rendition of a dignified gentleman. Larger, perhaps than technically 'miniature', it is a painting which displays well with those collections as well as on its own in some intimate spot, or on bookshelves. Full measurements noted on the photos, frame is 23 1/4" x 18 1/4" and 5/8" in depth.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type. Nearly 200 years in age, the frame has some very light gesso restorations to be done (or not - up to one's preference), and shows very well as it is. Unusual for an oil painting to be done on heavy copper plate as is this one. One would expect the copper plate to perhaps be in supplies of an engraver or printmaker instead, but it makes a fine and sturdy 'canvas' for the oil painting. Very few imperfections. Our photo lights and digital cameras pick up any tiny dusk spots and make them look like white imperfections, but there are none to the naked eye. Seems like it has a wash of varnish applied, which has slightly uneven appearance at certain angles of light. A nicely accomplished oil painting, plus searchable artist should you wish to take the time. Found in France.
