Wonderful & rare antique 1830-1850 Victorian era Black Forest hand carved 9 3/4" desk top thermometer stand with very unique pastoral themed cow, calf & herder figures and original thermometer on brass plaque mounting! For anyone who follows the decorating style of Tulsa's Charles Faudree (and I do!), you've seen his own rare Black Forest cows in several homes he's decorated over time. He's got a couple of decorator books out now, and he's always in the magazines we love to look through, from Veranda and Southern Accents to House Beautiful and I think he's even been in Architectural Digest, but not sure. But I digress - what I meant to say is that for years I've been looking at and admiring those wonderful old Black Forest cows. This piece a bit less 'majestic' but those are definitely little cow figures on that large carved base, one grazing near the top, another at rest and even a smaller calf in the front left! A cattle herder at the upper right, standing next to the thermometer panel and with reticulated tree branches & foliage above. A fabulous decorative accent, rare figures and sure to please! One of two similar pieces that we're listing today so, be sure to browse a bit while you're with us. Thanks!

Very good condition. The original thermometer and plaque are free from any defects or repairs with just some tarnish visible on the brass. A few tiny nips to the wood here & there, the cows' horns are most evident (holes remain so the horns must have been small carved separate pieces inserted there, relatively easy to replace if you wish). The man or herder figure is missing his right hand which would likely have held a walking stick. A few small worm/bug holes in the wood but nothing active. The bottom wood panel has a slight bend to it, there is a small wood riser glued to the rear left corner so it rests steady. See pictures for measurements.
