One of the fabulous bird sculptures by 19th century French Animalier, Jules Moignez (1835-1894), who is one of the very pinnacle sculptors of that movement along with Antoine-Louis Barye, C. Fratin, Isadore Bonheur, and a handful of others. The old works were often cast by Barbedienne Foundry, though not so many bear their mark. You see them in art museums around the world, and in collections in well-appointed homes. I've had a few over the decades, and this is one I've kept a long time. It's just in need of a small shade or a decorative bulb (the creamy French silk one I had on it has finally frazzled).
Very good to excellent throughout. It was, when I bought it in Paris, wired in silk cloth covered old French wiring that was certainly the original. It was made for early electric lighting, late 1800s. We'd had it rewired to US current way back when I bought it in Paris. The wiring remains practically new and is, of course, safe to use. A roll-cord on/off switch works perfectly, too. The plinth is marble, and is beautifully preserved without chip, crack, hairline nor any damage nor staining. Very sturdy. High gold to the solid bronze casting because of the dore bronze used. It will not change its finish over time. We have done nothing to maintain it beyond dusting. Measurements in full are noted on the photos. A gorgeous bedside lamp, desk lamp, accent lamp for a bathroom in your home or lodge, cabin, office. NOT a later reproduction. This is entirely old and original but the safe refreshed and USA wiring. Perfect for anyone who loves Black Forest and Animalier art like I do! It's time for me to begin to downsize. My loss - your gain!
