Boasting wonderful architectural depictions of 2 castles or large country manors, this shell card case is one that has surely been well treasured lo these 160-180 years it's been in existence. It comes to us in remarkably fine for for age and type. As you can see in our photos, each side has a different building. I don't recognize them, but perhaps you might and can email us and we'll add information for the buyer. The case is beautifully crafted, remains in fine working and useful order should you wish to tuck in a credit card and a few dollars or business cards (whichever is called for) and use it yourself as an evening 'bag' of sorts or as an after hours case that is a certainty for conversation starter. I used to use one of these (rotating my collection) when I worked at Paramount, and it was always so much easier to 'break the ice' in mixers and meetings. The minute I'd set it down, or open it for a business card, all eyes were immediately on it and conversations ensued. A wonderful gift idea, as well.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type, this one is late Georgian to earliest Victorian era, we'd say c. 1830-60s, no later. No chips or losses to the shell and mother of pearl shell, and it's brilliantly colored in cognac to chocolate, just as we all hunger to find. A fabulous one - perhaps would have been an early Grand Tour souvenir of England. Extra large size will hold today's business cards, credit cards. Measurements on photos.

The vast majority of worked and antique object tortoise shell material comes from the shells of two species of sea turtles: the hawksbill (Eretmo-chelys imbricata) and, more rarely, the green turtle (see box A). The shells of these turtles exhibit attractive patterns that normally consist of light to dark brown patches, though a homogeneous “cream”-colored variety called blond tortoise shell also exists.

IMPORTANT NOTE regarding antique tortoise shell or ivory: We are great supporters of protection for endangered species in our modern world. We never buy or sell anything 100 years or newer; we donate to anti-poaching organizations; we don't hunt; we conserve in ways that impact global warming (we're totally solar at home), knowing those measures also protect the animals in the wild today. We also recognize the vast cultural history we preserve with our care and reverence for these antique objects, and agree with CITES that objects over 100 years of age have nothing whatsoever to do with species depletion in our current world.

Our offering exceeds the age limitation of "more than 100 years of age", and is well within the exemption for CITES regulation. If imported, met the CITES regulation. This item will be handled and shipped from our Utah business, and is not available for shipment internationally, nor within the USA to California, NY, Nevada, Hawaii, New Jersey, Oregon, Washington if it contains ivory, sorry. Please see our small print for more details.
