The set is unique - we have never had a set that has a platinum mark but this set of scissors does bear a mark for the more precious than gold metal, platinum. We think the handles are platinum layered in 18k gold as there is also a gold mark, which would be more typical. The use of platinum would make the scissors handle more solid and useful and less likely to be damaged in use. Gold is a rather softer metal, after all. The set bears dates just earliest 1800s, not later than 1819 for its origin, though it also has been alloyed later on because it also bears a French eagle's profile used after 1838. This is not unusual. The earlier marks are the date ones. The set is complete other than the needle case for which there's an empty opening. The other parts of the set remain, some in less than perfect condition, but for age and type, still very rare to fine. The additional pieces of mother of pearl silk winder and 2 mother of pearl spools trimmed out in 18k gold, along with the gold thimble and also the rather rare addition of the stylus or pencil holder. The cap to the scent bottle is also 18k gold. Glorious old case!

Very good condition for age and type, the thimble and scissors have fared well through time, as have the mother of pearl spools (2) and silk winder) that remain with the set. There are some tiny dents in the old gold cap to that otherwise lovely old perfume bottle, and also in the elongated stylus or pencil holder. Scissors remain sharp, though there is a little darkening to the steel blades (typical of age). The handles to the scissors have a wonderful dolphin motif. Please look over the pieces. The wooden case is in good condition and is original to the set. Mirror in the inner lid is still intact, as well. A superb Palais Royal treasure from Napoleon's time.
