Purchased out of France with a larger grouping of 19th century hand carved Black Forest pieces, this is early 1900s, and I've seen the form before with carved lid, the finial of which has a pin cushion. I believe they were made as sewing caddies originally, though perhaps that was not the only form. This one obviously would have had a fitted lid. It's a stunning lathe turned and hand carved goblet of large size and deep enough in the cup to hold a small plant as a centerpiece, or any number of uses. Guest soaps for a bath? Very good to excellent condition for age and type. The piece is large and impressive, has not much loss at all for age, and is a brilliantly carved piece. I find a nip to tip of a leaf, and will mention also that there are several very old holes from woodworm exiting the old wood. No active infestation and there is no pithiness, only a few such marks to show its true age. All measurements noted on our photos.
