An Italian painting, " Noma 1869" written on back along with the artist's name C. Carafon Creuse" perhaps? The young woman captured with the rapturous upturned eyes mimicking those of the Bernini sculpture, Ecstasy of Teresa - a young nun caught in the throes of a passionate climax. The upturned eyes pose was a popular affectation we see in paintings of the 1860s - 70s of the PreRaphaelite movement in art. This miniature is an Italian work of art, an Italian frame with brass inner mat and covered silk velvet outer form, details shown in photos. Full measurements also noted on the photos.
Very good to excellent condition throughout, age and type considered. A truly splendid painting, even as a miniature, and the wafer has no losses nor damage. The frame shows age, has a card back, is 1/4" thick wood body with a cover of silk velvet and a beveled bronze rectangular mat, a very fitting frame for the era and style of the artwork.See image of back of the painting, the date and girl's name "Noma" and what I believe is the artist's signature.
