Fascinating little elegance dating to the mid-1700s, entirely hand sewn, embroidered, silk on silk and linen, it's a little wall-hanging weekly organizer, calling card calendar. Each flap has the day of the week (in French, of course), and it meant to hold little notes of schedules, callers, important events. In French paintings of the era (Louis XV to XVI - Marie-Antoinette) showing a woman at her boudoir, dressing table, you'll see these hung beside the mirror. We've had only a few over the decades even though I'm always watching for them. Photos are noted with measurements, and show how it's made and the delicate stitches. Charming!

Very good to excellent condition for age and type, it's rare to find super-delicate silk embroideries of this age that do not show some of their age. This one has very little. Look over our photos, it would have been hung there from the top, likely with a decorative pin, and a hole is left. Silk fabric backing shows the woman's sewing stitches and the constructed front is a work of embroiderer's art. Beautiful palette in the silks.
