Fabulous antique early to mid 1800s French or Belgian 24pc table knife set, a 2pc service for TWELVE with ebony or ebonized wood handles, silvered caps & collars and inlaid cartouche! The steel blades are all marked "Licot - Namur". Namur, Belgium was a hub of cutlery manufacturing through the middle of the 19th century. The Licot 'coutellerie' was founded in 1770 by Jean Francois Licot. The cutlery house quickly earned a deserved reputation for the quality of its products. In 1856, S. Mr. Leopold I visited the factory of J. F. Licot and granted him the title of "Manufacture Royale". Licot also displayed their wares at the 1867 Paris Exhibition. Only the blades bear marking so it is possible that the knives themselves are of French or other European make. We purchased the set out of France. Very good condition. There are no hallmarks on the silver caps & collars so we can't be sure if they're sterling silver or silver plate. Several knife handles have the rounded end of the silver cap pushed in a bit. The blades are all the original steel, not stainless, and do have some age tarnish and/or corrosion spots visible. The set includes twelve each of 10 1/4" dinner and the smaller 8 3/8" size knives. See picture for individual weights.
