I think the very first antique I bought on my own was a box when I was a grad student in London. And I've been hooked on beautiful boxes ever since. The one you see here is a real show-stopper. Stunning artistry of the Napoleon III cabinetry makers, whose creations are simply works of art. Brass inlays and an elaborate form and thick brass pencil edging set off the various hardwood veneers beautifully. Imagine the work! And with so many curves, one would expect a lesser Master's work to have lifted or lost some veneers over the 150 or so years since crafted. Even the 2 inner compartments are in fine form, as if it's never held tea. The single cover is as beautifully crafted as is the rest of the box. I think it very suitable to cigar presentation, though it is, of course, a tea caddy.  My own experience over many decades is that tea caddies are scarce to rare in these beautiful old French boxes. Likely made with the English Grand Tour traveler in mind. The French are not tea drinkers! As you can see, the lock plate is engraved with the purveyor's name, "Castelman, Marseille", an equivalent purveyor of finest quality items with a lofty history, and this is certainly equivalent to a TAHAN, Vervelle, P Sormani, or A. Giroux coffret. I do not have the original key at listing time. If we are able to match one from our stash of spares, I will add to the listing (and price).

Very good to excellent condition throughout. Raised on brass feet, it is elevated by its own beauty. I can find a rough spot or two around the very base, but you have to look for them. Veneers are all tight and in place, no lifts or loss to the brass work. Just an exceptionally fine antique French box in all ways. Remarkable form, all those curves, and not a single bit of loss on the thick pencil edging trim around top. A work of art, this one!
