Found in France, a 19th century or possibly earlier large oil painting executed on wooden board which is sawn, and is 1/4" thick. While thousands of artists have taken on this religious iconic scene, it always makes a comparison to the composition by Leonardo da Vinci, a fresco on wall of a small monastery in Milan, Italy. I've done my own journey there to see da Vinci's work, and this one just reminded me of it. A slightly 'folk art' feel to this one, it's in very nice condition and ready to display as it is, or to frame. There is no evidence on surface that would suggest a frame was ever used. I do not find a signature. Full measurements are noted on the photos.
Very good to excellent condition, as is typical of oil paintings done on wood panels - there is no old canvas to tear or crackle. I can see a single line which seems to me not so much to be a flaw, but which should be pointed out. It can be seen as a horizontal line above the figures, visible at certain angles of light. In the upside down and tilted detail shot, you can see it best, I think. Perhaps it was a flaw in the board before the painting was done. Not a distraction but bears a mention. Very appealing painting!
