Rare in size, completeness and condition, this opulent mid-1800s papier mache desk set is one of the finest we've seen or owned. Now only is it extra large (14.5" x 10.5" and 5.5" tall, overall), it has almost no flaws, has both of the original large inkwells, tray covered compartment, side panels of back-painted glass (eglomise) as pen trays, and I find not a single bit of the mother of pearl inlays lifted or missing. The elegant serpentine outer border, a miracle of design and preservation, has 2 lips, as you can see. Raised on 4 bun feet.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. Such a large and impressive set, 2 glass panels have been hand painted on backside, and neither one has even a tiny chip, no cracks. Colors are vibrant, still. The covered compartment lid is perfect - even the little mother of pearl knob remains. A thrill of mother of pearl on this one - all brilliant colorful pearlescent shimmer. I find a single small chip along bottom rim. It's in a place and of type which is quite easy to restore. The other very innocuous imperfection is a small flash-chip on the underside top rim of one of the inkwells - both are highlighted on our photos for your review. So much to love with this one.
