A Grand Tour souvenir painting after an early painting of one of the Austrian Royals, hand painted on natural wafer, in gouache and watercolor, and housed in a superb quality dore bronze 3-panel hinged tri-fold compact or etui which, opened, creates its own easel stand for display. The etui is sided in leather, is beautifully crafted and fitted with a convex cover glass. I should be able to identify the Royal. I've seen the painting before, with roses and veil - or perhaps its a typical Austrian bride? I would date this one mid-late 1800s. Folded, it is 3" x 2 1/2" and is 3/8" thick when closed. Heavy, perfect precision crafting. The gold embossment on the silk inner liner notes that is is from Vienna by Bruel & Rosenburg, in business in 1850-60s.
Very good to excellent condition on the case and cover glass, and the painting shows an old crack and restoration to the left of the painted woman, crossing her shoulder. I have not taken the painting out of the frame mount so all photos are taken through the convex cover glass, causing some reflections from photo lighting. Measurements are noted on the photos.
