A broad and 2 1/4" long large antique necklace or bracelet clasp. Interesting piece I've had for years, always thinking I'd have it restrung with seed pearls. Big beautiful banded agate set there in the frame, I thought it might be Georgian era owing to the Cannetille work oval mounting frame, and when acid-tested, that front piece does test 18k gold. The balance of the heavy clasp does not. The tongue of he clasp tests 12k, and the balance of the fine old jewelry piece is just 12k. An economy of craft, but a richness in wear. The link-hinged mounts at each side are drilled with 4 holes, suggesting either larger stones or pearls for each of the 4 strands or perhaps double-strung seed pearls. Whether is was once a necklace or bracelet clasp, it's large and quite heavy - a fine piece of antique jewelry, to be sure. Full measurements noted on the photos.
Very good to excellent condition throughout, and would be a stunning statement clasp for either pearls (I see it with 4 strands of 4-5mm pearls, actually), or gold or agate beads, depending on how formal you wish to go. Or just to add to your collection. Note that one link (ring) to hold the bead mount to the clasp will need to be replaced (enlargement showing that spot. A simple addition. The cannetille work is just beautiful and undamaged. Georgian to Victorian era (late 18th to mid-19th century).
