A charming Edwardian era oil painting on heavy canvas board, likely dates c.1900-1910. It is a portrait by an artist who has signed on backside, "Painted by Clarence Severance, Boston" but no date given. Perhaps a portrait of a friend, it has its own charm, but also indications the artist wasn't hugely successful in his materials. Framed with old framing nails, a few newer ones added to sides of the canvas. The frame is a lovely old one, original to the small painting, and we have a framer's (reframer) label from Ohio with a much more modern phone number. Likely one who simply reanchored the painting adding the new framer nails and the paper backing and their label. Full measurements noted on the photos.
Very good condition for age and type, frame remains largely unscathed, and also painting, though some crackle to the paint as it has dried, and unexperienced artist's application of perhaps too thick oil paint - something. Still, charming and nicely composed in the space. A real feel of an Edwardian woman in overcoat and huge fashionable hat.
