I imagine this was originally found at the boutiques of the old Palais Royal promenade, the little stars all around and the hand painted barrel in layers of paint and varnish giving it depth and added appeal and value. That method is routinely called, "Vernis Martin" after the brothers Martin who invented it. A method much loved by Marie-Antoinette, but I digress. The compact opera glass, surely a gentleman's, would collapse and tuck into a pocket. Unusual to find these with so many draws (6), and with intact lenses. Full measurements noted on photos.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type, very slightly 'stiff' on the extension, I think a factor of much time without being used. Likewise, there is some dust on the interior which lightly clouds the lenses. Normally this is a simple thing to clean, and each end unscrews for same, but I'm leaving it to the next owner's skill and un-shaky hands. A really charming piece, and rare! Just in from France.
