A masterfully cone small copy in oil painting, after the famous portrait of Napoleon, "Napoleon Bonaparte In His Study" by Hippolyte (Paul) Delaroche (1797 - 1856). Fine 19th century 'copy' is oil on stretched canvas, and while it is unsigned, it is fine quality and would have been created for the 'tourist' and admirers trade as a souvenir. A portrait in miniature, very true to the large original painting, it is also very nicely framed in an early to mid-1800s French frame, shadow-boxed with deep gold filet holding in under glass cover for protection. An old remnant of the gilded "N" up top has suffered some loss, but can still elevate the display. One of our finest miniatures ever of Napoleon in the height of his power and regard. Very good to excellent condition for age and type. We'd date this miniature to mid-1800s, perhaps as late as 1870s, revival of the French Empire aesthetic during the reign of Napoleon's nephew, Emperor Napoléon III, the last Emperor of France. The frame has an imperfection upper left corner as you look at it, a line that seems to represent a repaired hairline, and the "N" is missing part of itself. Ready to hang, a fabulous painting and frame. Painting is in oil on canvas.
