Charming antique German, Swiss or Austrian oil painting on metal or copper panel, a dark interior pub scene with wine barrels, two figures and displayed in the original gilt gesso on wood frame! This one has the original paper label on the back, I've tried to decipher it but the handwritten portion has been difficult. The first part easy, “Genre-Bild,”
German for “genre picture” or a painting depicting an everyday scene (peasants, domestic life, children, etc.), rather than a portrait, landscape, or religious subject. The script appears to start out with "Der Weingrade" or "Der Weingrobe" or similar, which would translate into something like "vineyard", "vintner" or "wine seller" maybe? Anyone fluent in German who can recognize it, I'd love to finally know what it says in its entirety. The painting itself wonderfully done, very dark but the detail and everyday figural scene are each charming as can be. Wonderful frame, too!
Very good contain. The frame is in great shape, well cared for with only possible small nips to the gilding. The painting, as noted, is on metal or copper and is in fine shape with the exception of the thick clear coat, varnish or mastic used that has aged with crazing or similar evident.
