A charming pastoral of a young girls' wander in the country, where her dog sits beside her, a large pair of ducks come near and a child's toy sailboat floats downstream. Mid-1800s, a child's sampler or work more than likely, as needle arts were of importance and girls were taught early. This one seems never to have been either framed nor used, making it all the more likely it was a child's work - similarly cherished as our own children's early artworks. Note that the needlework scene has an open unworked canvas, and often this type were framed rather than intended for pillow tops. It could certainly be either, though - supple and strong canvas. A panel 18" x 16", would be lovely framed well for a bedroom or child's room.
Very good to excellent condition throughout. Unused, it dates c.1840-60s, and remains supple and without fading or odors. For decades I have collected these best needlework panels on my frequent buying trips, partly just to preserve and honor the arts of women. Found in France.
