From my own lifelong collection, and located in a stored crate, a surprise this week of a group of stunning antique French sceau, sealing wax seals and marks like this one, I remember finding it - my own initials on the matrix monogram, S D. The handle is elegant banded agate, which is nearly impossible to photograph because it shows so dark, the pale gray lines running through it, and the variation of agate color from caramel to dark chocolate have not been done justice in some of these photos so retaken and added some. Full measurements noted on the photos.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. A gorgeous large hand carved banded agate handle which hasn't a single flaw to report. No chips, no cracks or hairlines. Perfectly preserved and more than 150 years old.The steel matrix with ornate head mount is also perfect, no dents. It either is not silver, or is just unmarked. The agate ones like this might be worked from Bavarian regions where elegant agate objects and boxes were created. I'm listing numerous important seals this week, some shown alongside this one in final photos (our ambiance photos), so do look for the others.
