An antique beadwork needlepoint Tapestry. Shield-shaped, this cabinet piece displays the royal arm with lion and unicorn supporters which would have had the motto ‘Dieu et Mon Droit’, ‘God and my Right' across the ribbon banner. The British Royal coat of arms is subject on this Victorian era (c.1840-60s for this one) fire screen panel. It would have been on an adjustable metal hinged clamp type 'frame' which would anchor to mantel. It would have had a backing in oil cloth or heavier linen fabric. Those backings often became brittle from the heat of a fire.  The panel in entirely hand-worked, and is missing some stitching, particularly the ribbon banner at the feet of the lion and unicorn. Entirely worked in wool and silk yarns and in colored glass beads, this one is not (in my opinion) sturdy enough for a pillow top, but can be a wall hanging or re-backed and used as a firescreen. I have 2 of those extending metal mounts - I'll have to get them out of warehouse and list them.  One might alternatively wish to frame this one. Full measurements noted on photos, but it's large, 19.5" x 17.5" plus long luxurious fringe.

Good to very good condition for age and type, it is not missing beadwork and very little red needlepoint stitch loss, but it is as if someone unpicked the stitching of the ribbon banner at the feet of the lion and unicorn. Lots of photos for your review. I don't suggest you use this one as a top for a throw pillow, as noted above, though properly finished and backed, one might decide to.
