Frame is 15.5" x 13.75" x 2.5" Original c.1780-1840 silk work Gesso Applique on wood original frame, with glass Another fine silk work tapestry, this one of 2 young girls, one sheltering the other in the stormy night. There is fear on the child's face, protectiveness in the older girl or young mother's face, but both are safe, all these 200+ years just as you see them here. The work is beautifully done, not much deterioration at all, though you'll note a few slits in the silk - worst of them a slit in the silk to right of child's shoulder and also a little staining - or is that the watercolor on silk to denote the darkened storm clouds. Yes, I think it is. Faces are hand painted in watercolor on the silk, as is always done, and also are the hands/arms. Look at the beautiful stitching. This is likely the work of a relatively young child, and needle arts were the only ones open to girls, remember, in that era.
Very good condition as you see it. One split in the silk, mentioned above. The frame has an imperfect upper right corner (in images) and perhaps a few other flaws of age, but survives really quite well.
