A magnificent c,1750-1770s portrait miniature, remarkable 1/2" face on this handsome gentleman. The painting is pristine, as well. Unsigned, I opened to see if there might be ID. Photos show it opened to view. The convex glass in a bit unique, gold lined and black painted interior of the glass is referred to as "eglomise" (back-painted glass), and is rare, as well. It is truly incredible to be able to enlarge these miniaturist's art works as we do and have it viewable as if it were a full-sized painting/portrait. This man wears his era, really - the side-rolls and pony tail in back with large black bow, a ruffled ascot, a velvet suit in pale blue. Measurements noted on photos.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, the painting is truly exceptional and in exceptional in condition. You see that it is adhered to a backing of painted foil, which attaches to the back of the painted convex cover glass, held in place with a very old natural cotton pad and backed in card. It is most likely this eglomise and frame would have mounted into a wooden panel, enlarging the outer frame. I found this museum piece in France ages ago.
