This is a delightful 19th century English school Grand Tour souvenir version of the Portrait of Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire (1757-1806) with her daughter Georgiana Cavendish (1783-1858). From (aprés) the famous painting of Joshua Reynolds. Some license taken, as you can see from the included painting by Reynolds, a seascape and ship, a fan in her hands - perhaps requests by the person who commissioned this one, or just a decision by the 19th century artist as he/she created this charming painting on wafer, probably about c.1850-70, Victorian era. A popular subject and historical figure, this one would have become a treasured souvenir of someone's visit to the National Portrait Gallery, London, where this painting would likely have then been on display. Measurements are noted on the photos, but this miniature is a remarkable little treasure, work of art, with her face just 1/2" from chin to her hairline, and that of her baby daughter is only 3/8", chin to bangs. Delicate treatment of the faces, clothing, hair - all details. Interesting inclusion of a hand fan, adding additional interest. I purchased this in France. I'm not positive if the artist, who has not signed this work, might have been French or English.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. The mid-1800s miniature painting is on thin natural wafer, painted in gouache, and has no damage at all to report. Very slightly convex by now to the opposite of the convex cover glass which is original.
