Signed "Polin 1844" at about the 4 o'clock position on the wafer.

Rare, charming, perfect painting of a child of about 4, probably his portrait upon becoming his father's son. In that era, all babies dressed the same, a gown for easy diapering. Mama's baby, til all the bed-wetting and days of toddling about gave way, along with his long hair, to this new stage of his development. You see images of children, all with long hair, some parted in center and some on the side, and all in long gowns. Some say, "why are they all girls?", but in fact, the side-parted hair is a boy. Again, about 4 or so, potty-training all done and out of his gowns in "in his britches", long hair shorn, suddenly becomes a man of the house, ready to learn from his father what that entails.  Innocence.

Very good to excellent condition throughout. The painting is superb, perfectly protected beneath its cover glass. The frame is beautiful and original. The only thing notable is that the tabs which would have been on back to hold it all together have given way to time, and someone has closed it with wire, which works fine and secures the pieces perfectly, though it's a little unsightly if you turn it over. Still, it's a hanging loop backing and you'll be the only one who sees the wire. Measurements are noted on the photos.
