Fine antique early Victorian era c. 1850s 14.25" wide Chinoiserie style Chinese export lacquer sewing box, a large chest with gold enamel figural decoration, fitted interior & slide out front drawer! This is one of three mid 1800s Chinoiserie style boxes that we're listing this week so, if you're a collector, be sure to browse our current inventory. This one the larger of the two sewing boxes and we also have a huge campaign or traveler's writing chest with slope or lap desk, quite rare where these old Chinese lacquer pieces are concerned. This one with quite a bit of wear or loss to the gold enamel decoration but enough to get an idea of its once original grandeur. Original bronze side handles and the interior is near pristine, with a lift out tray complete with removable boxes, lidded compartments with figural gold enamel decoration and gold painted edging. The slide out drawer appears to be writing related with a figural panel for writing, pen tray to the left and spaces to the right for stamps or small glass ink pots that have gone missing. Wonderful visual & decorative appeal!

Good condition. As noted and evident in the images, the gold enamel decoration on the exterior is quite worn. There are a few external nips or chips to the lacquer but no major damage. It does appear to have originally had carved wood feet, likely the lion's paw type as was common with these but they've either been lost or removed over the years. See pictures for all measurements.
